Prairie Style Contemporary
2006 ALCC Award of Excellence in Renovation
This garden design was influenced by the Prairie style architecture of the home. A front circular drive was eliminated and replaced by a shorter drive into the garage. The dramatic new entrance is a distinctive Anazasi stone walkway, chosen to complement the home’s exterior brick color, and a custom built wooden bridge. Mexican beach pebbles alongside the walkway create the feel of a winding river path. A mix of perennials, dwarf specimen conifers and a groundcover ‘tapestry’ were planted to give a ‘prairie’ feel to the landscape. Adding harmony to this landscape and to the existing pines on the property, deciduous clump trees, Cockspur Hawthorn and a River Birch were placed next to large moss rock boulders. Prairie Style planters add balance and interest to the entrances of the home.
A more traditional patio garden was installed where the family gathers to entertain and enjoy their own gardening. Ornamental trees were planted to enhance the space with color and texture; Japanese Maple, Weeping Cherry, Tri-color Beech and a Magnolia.
