This Cheeseman Park Historic home was hidden behind large overgrown Junipers and old shrubbery. The goal was to modernize and enhance the entrance with formal plantings that complimented this unique facade. A border of boxwood, two Cockspur Thornless Hawthorn and a carpet of spring blooming sweet woodruff were planted in the two companion beds flanking the front portico. From there planting in each bed had to take a different approach because of varying sun levels during the day. In the northern bed, hostas enjoy the cool shaded setting and on the south are Stella D’Oro daylilies that raise their blossoms to the warm sunshine. Two Dwarf Foxtail pines balance the design and allow for growth without hiding the entry. Outside the perimeter of the south garden, a White Weeping Spruce was planted as a distinctive accent.
In order to fulfill the owners request for privacy on the south side of the home, four green Japanese Maple, trained to grow into espalier form, were installed creating a natural screen.
Utilizing the walkway to the back, an existing bed of English Ivy was enhanced with a European Mountain Ash, large holly, a Late Panicle Hydrangea, and Citronelle Coral Bells.
The patio design was started by removing a sod area and building a custom Pergola with flagstone floor. Beds were fashioned around the perimeter giving a woodland feeling to the site. Plantings included Chanticleer Pear, European Mountain Ash, Bosnian Pine and Citation Yew trees along with white Spirea, Carol Macke Daphne, and an assortment of colorful shade perennials. Vigorous orange trumpet vines were planted to grow up the wood pergola, establishing a living canopy.
Making the transition from the home to the lower level patio are two raised beds supported by stone retaining walls. These gardens were filled with daylilies, 2 Tree Form Altheas, a white butterfly bush and Vinca with dark leaves and periwinkle blooms. A row of Norway Fastigate Spruce, fronted with feathery Maiden Grasses provides a visual screen between homes and softens the view.
This project succeeded in establishing an entertaining oasis.
