This Congress Park Mission style home is located on a steeply fronted property. The first task was creating a foundation of terraced beds using composite interlocking blocks chosen to compliment the brick home. These beds, which wrap around the corner lot, add structure and are planted with red Knock Out Shrub roses adding continuous color throughout the summer. The base of the walls is lined with blue Avena Grass. The front entrance is balanced by a burgundy Japanese Maple on one side and a distinctive Sylvestris Pine Topiary opposite. The path to the front porch is enhanced with a border of boxwood. Green Mound Junipers and Vinca serve as a ground cover throughout the beds.
The side yard, with heavy pedestrian traffic, needed to be designed with a border wall and structured semi circular planter boxes for three Prariefire Clump Crabs. These trees with rose blooms and beautiful burgundy bark and foliage compliment the brick of the home. An espalier Japanese Maple was planted to soften the brick face of the side veranda. Along the sidewalk wall are Flower Carpet Shrub Roses planted for their red color, resilience and spreading feature.
Working with Chad Beall of Treefrog Woodworking, Denver, a new fence and Pergola with Mission style posts were designed and built. A flagstone patio was laid under the structure and also a walkway and open area for the barbeque and additional seating. This area has gardens filled with a small Brepo Pine, Miss Kim Lilacs, Ivory Jade Euonymus and flowering perennials. Fragrant Honeysuckles climb along the fence and Ramona Clematis ascends the posts.
These homeowners enjoy the task of gardening and growing vegetables. Waist high Redwood planters make tending and harvesting the herbs and tomatoes with ease.
A variety of specimen trees give the garden interest throughout the seasons. A Weeping Redbud with its graceful form and vibrant fuchsia blossoms in early spring adds a unique focal point. Planted in the far corner of the property is a Tri-color Beech with its variegated leaves of rose, white and green. Norway Fastigate Spruce and three Yoshino Cherry provide a screen from the neighboring property and at their base is an assortment of colorful perennials. A pair of dark green, long needled Bosnian Pine provides privacy. Adding visual impact with stunning orchid like spring lavender blooms is a Galaxy Magnolia.
